| Speaker Núñez Anticipates Participating in Peaceful, Powerful Pro-Immigration May Day Rally Tomorrow in Los Angeles |
|
LOS ANGELES – Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez (D-Los Angeles) today released the following statement anticipating tomorrow’s May Day immigration rally in Los Angeles: “Tomorrow thousands of Angelinos will again take to the streets in pursuit of fairness and justice for the immigrants who are an integral part of our community. Last year’s march was marred by the actions of agitators unaffiliated with the event and by overreactions from law enforcement who were supposed to be keeping the peace. Over the past year we have seen a conscientious and appropriate response to these events by the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD. I look forward to taking part in a peaceful and successful march tomorrow. Having met this week with immigrant workers who are being targeted by abusive ICE raids and with immigrant students who are being denied the dream of higher education, I know the call for justice and fairness is unfortunately as timely and necessary as ever. I ask all those involved tomorrow, participants and law enforcement alike, to act in a spirit of peaceful cooperation. Forces who are anti-immigrant and forces who oppose the LAPD would all love nothing more than another episode of discord. Let’s not give them the satisfaction. Let’s all take an approach that advances the goals of the march and moves us beyond the problems of last year.” |
