| Building renaming ceremony to honor Rosa Parks during Women's History Month | |
(SAN BERNARDINO) -- A government building renaming ceremony on Friday in downtown San Bernardino will honor African American civil rights activist Rosa Parks. The Rosa Parks Memorial Building Dedication is 10 a.m. at the State Government Center, 464 W. 4th St. Open to the public, the event will feature a tour and unveiling of building markers and a plaque by the Department of General Services. District 62 Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto) and Rialto Councilman Joe Baca Jr. are among the featured speakers. Rosa Parks is best known for refusing to give up her seat at the front of a city bus for a white passenger. Her arrest on Dec. 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Ala. for civil disobedience triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott and a widespread resistance movement against Jim Crow segregation laws. The U.S. Congress later called her the Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement. "The dedication of this state building for Rosa Parks honors all those who fought, and continue to fight, for civil rights and equal opportunity," Assembly Member Carter says. "It is so appropriate that we are recognizing her invaluable contributions during Women's History Month." The State Government Building was officially renamed following the passage of Concurrent Resolution 129 in 2006, which was authored by former District 62 Assemblymember Joe Baca Jr. The State Department of General Services worked with Assembly Member Carter and her staff to design markers and a plaque and help organize the ceremony.
