Smog Checks for Lightweight Diesel Vehicles
AB 1488
Beginning January 1, 2010, AB 1488 will require that lightweight
diesel vehicles (built since 1998) be smog checked just like all
other cars and SUVs. There are an estimated 800,000 vehicles in
this category.
This law alone can eliminate one and a half tons of dangerous
pollutants from the air Californians breathe every day, according to
the Air Resources Board. Here's why:
- Although California has some of the most stringent emission
standards in the country, the Los Angeles Basin and other parts of
California still have dangerously high levels of polluted air.
- In working toward improved air quality, the state has many
challenges, including a large population depending on automotive
transportation.
- The current Smog Check program does not include lightweight
diesel vehicles.
