Assemblyman Solorio Honored as "Ambassador of Peace"

Violence Prevention Coalition of Orange County
Recognizes Assemblyman Solorio
for his Gang Violence Prevention Advocacy

SACRAMENTO – The Violence Prevention Coalition of Orange County honored Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) at its 11th annual Ambassador of Peace Awards held June 9. Assemblyman Solorio, the Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Public Safety, received his award for his work preventing gang-related violence.

As an advocate of public safety through early intervention, Solorio applauded the other honorees as he emphasized the importance of taking back our streets and making them safe. At the lunchtime event, he said the “Ambassador of Peace” honor was humbling.

think every community needs to celebrate the people who are making a difference," he said. "We are here today recognizing various individuals who have made a mark in their own community as it relates to violence prevention, and I definitely tip my hat to them."

Assemblyman Solorio is committed to policies and legislation that support those ideals. Solorio-authored legislation, and other Assembly bills he has supported in his position as Public Safety Committee Chair, underscores his dedication to violence prevention.

The newly created statewide anti-gang strategy of prevention, intervention, suppression and re-entry programs that originated with the formation of the State Anti-Gang Coordinator Office is the hallmark of Solorio’s efforts. Solorio’s AB 104, also signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger, makes it easier and more cost effective for city attorneys to file civil injunctions against gangs, resulting in a reduction of the impact of gang violence and illegal drug activity in the community.

The Violence Prevention Coalition of Orange County was established in 1996. It remains the only countywide affiliation of businesses, community organizations, public and private agencies, and individuals promoting violence prevention through a public health approach. Its mission is to promote the health and wellness of our community by reducing violence.

Assemblyman Solorio also serves on the Assembly Education, Transportation, and Appropriations Committees. He represents the Sixty-Ninth Assembly District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana.
