Assemblyman Solorio Says Tax Break for Working Families Often
"It's Your Money, You Earned It, Now Get it Bac

SACRAMENTO - Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) wants working families in his district with limited income to know that a government tax refund may be available, they just have to ask for it. Unfortunately, the Earned Income Tax Credit, designed to help alleviate the tax burden of low and middle income American families, often goes unclaimed by those who need it the most.

"In Santa Ana alone, conservative estimates state that more than 7,000 individuals and families who would qualify for the tax refund don't know about it and don't apply," says Solorio. "I want those millions of unclaimed dollars in the wallets of those who support our local economy. They deserve it."

One of the largest federal credits available to low and moderate income workers, the Earned Income Tax Credit returns approximately $43 billion to over 23 million families in the United States annually. It lifts more children out of poverty than any other federal or state government program.

"A family can earn as much as $38,000 per year and still qualify," explains Solorio. "And for some, a hefty check of thousands of dollars can show up in their mailbox. That money can put gas in the tank and food on the table. It can even pay for college."

Applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit is as simple as filing a tax return and writing "EIC" in the space allocated on the 1040 or 1040A form. The IRS will figure out the return. For more information about the Earned Income Tax Credit, visit www.irs.gov.

State Assemblyman Jose Solorio is the Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee and also serves on the Assembly Education, Transportation, and Appropriations Committees. He represents the Sixty-Ninth Assembly District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana. For more information about Assemblyman Solorio, visit www.assembly.ca.gov/solorio
