(
RIALTO, CA) -- Former NFL players are volunteering to coach hundreds of  young people in football drills to carry on the legacy of  David Lang, a former NFL running back from Rialto, CA.

David Lang, who played five seasons with the NFL, started Legends by Lang, a nonprofit sports educational and youth mentoring organization following his successful football career with the
Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys.  Fletcher Lang took over the organization after his  36-year-old brother was fatally shot on May 20, 2005 in an apparent argument with a 19-year-old acquaintance.                                                                                                                                                                         David Lang

"By doing this football day camp, we want to remind kids that there's hope and a way to overcome any obstacles that may be occurring," said Fletcher Lang, a high school security guard. "Our main focus is education, and that is needed for young people to reach their goals and accomplish their dreams."

The volunteer coaches have included Roman Phifer, former three-time Super Bowl champ; Chris Hayes, retired Super Bowl champ from the Green Bay Packers; Ron Brown, formerly with the Los Angeles Rams and Oakland Raiders; Willie McGinnis, three-time Super Bowl champ with the New England Patriots; and two-time pro bowler Mark Seay, AFC champion for San Diego Chargers and five-time Super Bowl referee Al Jury Sr.

At a June camp at
Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto, about 400 young people participated and they received free football cleats and athletic shoes, courtesy of the non-profit organization Samaritan's Feet. The young people also receive raffle prizes in an afternoon session of motivational speaking by the former NFL greats and public officials.

"The discipline that these boys learn in sports will translate into every aspect of their lives, whether it  be education, family life or being a productive citizen in their community," said California District 62 Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter, a Legends by Lang sponsor who served for 24 years on the board of the Rialto Unified School District.

The work of the nonprofit Legends by Lang is continuing year round thanks to increased sponsorship, said Regal Watson, event coordinator and a
San Bernardino high school counselor. Volunteers will  be conducting a food, clothing and Christmas toy drive later this year. Other football day camp sponsors include Wells Fargo and Wal-Mart. For information about the football day camp and Legends by Lang, contact Fletcher Lang at (951) 377-1553 and Regal Watson and (909) 886-2965.
