David Lang inspires former NFL greats to coach area youth at free football day camp in Rialto on Saturday

Note: Legends of Lang event is Saturday, June 14, 2008.

(
RIALTO) -- Former NFL players will coach and inspire 400 young people in football drills at Wilmer Amina Carter High School on Saturday to carry on the legacy of  David Lang, a former NFL running back from Rialto.

For the second year, Legends by Lang, a nonprofit sports educational organization, is sponsoring the football day camp and appearances by former NFL players from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free and only the first 400 young people, ages 8 to 17, who arrive early enough to register can participate. Last year,  admission was $30, but business sponsors have come forward and are footing the bill, said Regal Watson, a San Bernardino High School intervention counselor and event coordinator.

The volunteer coaches and motivational speakers will include Roman Phifer, former three-time Super Bowl champ; Chris Hayes, retired Super Bowl champ from the Green Bay Packers; Ron Brown, formerly with the Los Angeles Rams and Oakland Raiders; Willie McGinnis, three-time Super Bowl champ with the New England Patriots; and two-time pro bowler Mark Seay, AFC champion for San Diego Chargers and five-time Super Bowl referee Al Jury Sr.

Lunch is included and dozens of raffle prizes have been donated such as electronics,  bicycles and gift cards.  Every participant will get free football cleats and athletic shoes, courtesy of the non-profit organization Samaritan's Feet, said Fletcher Lang,  a Wilmer Amina Carter High School security guard, who took over the youth mentoring program that his brother David started following his successful football career with the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys. David Lang, 36, an Eisenhower High School graduate who played in the 1995 Super Bowl for the Dallas Cowboys, was fatally shot on
May 20, 2005 in an apparent argument with a 19-year-old acquaintance.

"By doing this football day camp, we want to remind kids that there's hope and a way to overcome any obstacles that may be occurring," said Fletcher Lang, who lives in
Moreno Valley. "Our main focus is education, and that is needed for young people to reach their goals and accomplish their dreams."

Local and elected officials will also be speaking including District 62 Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter, Rialto Unified School District Superintendent Edna Davis-Herring, Rialto Mayor Grace Vargas and San Bernardino Sixth Ward City Council Member Rikke Van Johnson.  "The discipline that these boys learn in sports will translate into every aspect of their lives, whether it  be education, family life or being a productive citizen in their community," said Assembly Member Carter, who is one of the sponsors of the Legends by Lang football day camp this year.

The work of the nonprofit Legends by Lang will continue year round thanks to increased sponsorship, Watson said. Volunteers will  be conducting a food, clothing and Christmas toy drive later this year. Other football camp sponsors include Wells
Fargo, Wal-Mart International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union 477, Columbia Steel, Da-Spot Hair Salon and Refreshing Spring Community Church in Riverside.
