CalTrans has announced that it is now accepting community applications for Safe Routes to School (SR2S) grants, and State Senator Nell Soto (D – Pomona) is encouraging local agencies to submit their requests well before the June 30 deadline. The popular SR2S program, which was established by AB 1475 (by then-Assemblywoman Soto) in 1999, is now in its sixth funding cycle. The program sets aside approximately $20-25 million of California’s share of federal transportation dollars for safety enhancements near schools. Local government agencies have used SR2S funds to install crosswalks, build bicycle paths and lanes, construct sidewalks, and implement traffic calming programs around schools. “Pedestrian accidents are a leading cause of fatal injuries among 5-12 year olds, yet many areas near schools lack crosswalks or sidewalks,” Soto said. “Communities should take advantage of these funds, so that we can make traveling to and from school safer for California’s children.” The Senator encouraged local agencies to submit their requests for funding soon, given the highly competitive nature of the program. During the program’s first four funding cycles, CalTrans received 1,500 applications but only 273 projects received SR2S money.
