SACRAMENTO -- The families of National Guard members who are killed in the line of duty would get a six-month suspension of loan payments under a bill that's been sent to the governor's desk.

The Senate voted 33 to 2 to approve Assembly amendments to a bill by Senator Nell Soto of Pomona, sending it to Governor Schwarzenegger.

The measure would defer for six months principal and interest payments on financial obligations incurred by the slain Guard member or his or her spouse. The deferral would also cover service and renewal charges and any fees connected to the loan or debt.

Survivors of slain Guard members receive a 12-thousand dollar death benefit, but supporters of Soto's bill say it's inadequate, particularly in an era when Guard members are frequently called up for fighting overseas and terms of their service are often extended.
