April Meeting Of The Young Legislators – A Green Success

NORWALK, California – The April meeting of the Young Legislators program had members gather at the Southern California Edison (SCE) Service Center in Norwalk to learn about Business and the Environment.

Twenty three (23) participants of the program were greeted by Sylvia Southerland, manager of regional public affairs for SCE, who provided a tour of the facility and lunch followed by a discussion on SCE’s environmental programs.

Key areas of discussion included ways individuals can become energy efficient utilizing programs offered by businesses, understanding the various types of alternative energies available to consumers including wind and solar power, and methods of conservation.

Assemblyman Mendoza joined the Young Legislators and spoke on the need to become proactive in “green” causes.  “We can not forget that we, as individuals, can make an impact on the amount of waste we produce at home, in the community and at work or school,” said Assemblyman Mendoza.  “Understanding the three R’s (REDUSE, REUSE and RECYCLE) involved in becoming environmental stewards is key to involving others in programs that can help our environment.”

The Young Legislators Program is a leadership program for high school students offered by the Office of Assemblyman Tony Mendoza. It is designed to educate tomorrow’s leaders through a unique blend of discussion forums, interaction with business leaders, government officials, and community organizations.  This insight provides students with first-hand knowledge on how each sector works and its affect on economies, public policy and public education.  Upon completion of the program students are invited to attend an all-expense paid trip to Sacramento for a private tour of the Capitol and participation in a mock Assembly session.
