Sacramento - Assemblymember Betty Karnette (D-Long Beach) was recently appointed as an Assembly liaison to the Historic State Capitol Commission. The Commission was re-established in 1999 after a hiatus of twelve years and is charged with overseeing a comprehensive master plan for the restoration, preservation and maintenance of the historic State Capitol.

Stated Karnette, "California's State Capitol building is a historical and architectural jewel. Each year, thousands of visitors enjoy the historic and museum spaces and it is a privilege to participate in the stewardship of this important landmark. I look forward to serving on the Commission on behalf of the State Assembly."

According to the Commission, their focus in the coming year will be to establish a maintenance program and manual for the State Capitol Building. Due to budget constraints, they have been unable to provide a maintenance program and manual for several years. The Commission also participates in the Capitol Park Master Plan, which is currently underway with the Department of General Services.

The Historic State Capitol Commission consists of seven members. In addition to the two members appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly and two members appointed by the President pro Tempore of the Senate, the State Historic Preservation Officer, the State Librarian and the State Archivist serve on the Commission. The members of the Commission serve without compensation.
