Sacramento - Assemblymember Betty Karnette (D-Long Beach) honored Dr. Susanne Lawrenz-Miller today on the Floor of the California State Assembly at the nineteenth annual "Woman of the Year" ceremony. Dr. Miller, the Director of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium located in San Pedro, was selected for her commitment to public education in marine science and conservation and dedication to the museum and the community it serves. "The hard work and efforts of Dr. Miller have truly transformed the Cabrillo Aquarium into a world class facility. The aquaculture research exhibit laboratory, Exploration Center and student library are products of her initiative and drive and are tremendous assets to the community. Students, young and old, have experienced the benefits of the aquarium's expansion and science education programs and I am grateful for her stewardship of the aquarium," stated Karnette. Dr. Susanne Lawrenz-Miller received a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Washington, following a B.A. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to her position as Museum Director, Dr. Miller serves as an adjunct professor of biology at CSU, Long Beach. Her scientific interests are in the ecology, behavior, and biomechanics of seashore animals and in long-term changes in marine populations. "As a math and science teacher for many years, I know the value of "hands on" learning. Thanks to Dr. Miller, over 200,000 school children each year are able to experience environmental and science education programs at the Cabrillo Aquarium. Hopefully, they too will become stewards of the environment and we will share in the benefits of a better and cleaner world," said Karnette. |
