Assemblymember Lowenthal: Equality Takes A Hit With High Court’s Prop 8 Ruling

(Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) joined several members of the Assembly Democratic Caucus at a capitol news conference to express their individual and collective dismay over the California Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld Proposition 8, the ban on same sex marriage. Assemblymember Lowenthal says the ruling legalized discrimination against millions of Californians. Despite the ruling the Long beach Democrat says she remains hopeful and says she’s ready to support the ongoing struggle to bring equal rights to all Californians, regardless of the sexual identity. Workforce Network gets $6.3 Million to Stimulate More Jobs.

On Wednesday May 27, 2009, Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lomita and Torrance leaders gathered to announce plans for the $6.3 million in economic stimulus funding received by Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, in addition to Workforce Investment Act money, will allow Pacific Gateway to help 2,000 to 3,000 more residents get much-needed job training and counseling at one-stop career centers in Long Beach, Torrance and San Pedro.  The network will dedicate nearly $3 million of those funds to worker assistance, $2.3 million toward finding employment for young people and intends to hire 1,200 youth ages 14-24 from Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lomita and Torrance this summer and $1 million will focus on supporting small businesses through several programs, including an outreach effort called “Your Next Hire.”  For more information please call (562) 570-WORK


May 18, 2009: Caltrans Partners with Small Businesses to offer Contract Training Programs.

On May 18, 2009, The California Construction Contracting Program, in cooperation and partnering with Caltrans, has created to provide, no cost, individual construction and business management counseling and training to small businesses, with an emphasis on construction and professional service contracting.  The purpose of the program features seven modules that offers small business owners a wide variety of carefully designed, expert courses that will assist small businesses with in-depth, quality counseling and training needed to improve their technical knowledge, business acumen and to aid in their quest to successfully bid a Caltrans project.  For more information you may call 916-445-3512 or visit www.buildcalifornia.org


ETP announces Job Training Program in 54th Assembly District.

On March 20, 2009, The Employment Training Panel (ETP) has announced the approval of a job training program in the 54th Assembly District, in the amount of $125,195 for A-CCORD, which serves as the contractor for this program.  The purpose of the ETP program is to support the overall California economy by ensuring that employers have the training workers that they need to compete in a global economy.  For more information you may call (818) 761-6409.
