California receives more than $68 Million in American Recovery Act Funds for Weatherization Program.

October 6, 2009 – California has been awarded more than $68 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act weatherization funding for non-profit, local governments and community action agencies.  Locally, the County of Los Angeles has received $3 million of the $68 million statewide funds.  The weatherization program is designed to aid low-income families weatherize their homes, which decreases utility bills and saves energy while stimulating local economies.  Households with incomes at or below 75 percent of the state median income are eligible.  For more information about eligibility criteria and/or to apply for weatherization services, please call 1-866-675-6623.


October 1, 2009 – Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson and other Southern California leaders in announcing that over $26.5 million in clean air grants have been awarded to Southern California as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  In helping California promote green jobs and clean vehicles, these funds will assist Southern California in retrofitting and replacing diesel engines in construction vehicles, cargo handling equipment, school buses, heavy-duty trucks and locomotives in the Southern California areas.  Locally, the Port of Long Beach will gain $4 million to implement a large-scale diesel emission reduction project involving equipment replacements, engine re-powers, and/or engine retrofits for 112 pieces of cargo handling equipment including rubber-tired gantry cranes and two harbor crafts.


September 25, 2009 – Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal joined Signal Hill City Council leaders and the Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce in welcoming PETCO to Signal Hill. The 15,000 square-foot store is the city’s newest business arrival.


California Lawmaker Wants to Help “Aged Out” Foster Youth

(Sacramento) – When most foster youth turn 18, they are essentially on their own, with no help from the system or their family.  California Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) wants to help soften the landing of foster youth after they age out of the system.  Lowenthal’s legislation would provide one year of federally funded food stamps for foster youth, to help them as they try to get on their feet and live on their own.  More in this Assembly Access Video…


California Lawmaker Determined to Help Our Troops Vote

(Sacramento) – Members of the U.S. military or any American citizen that is abroad during an election, may find it difficult to vote.  California Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) wants to change that.  Lowenthal’s legislation would allow mail-in ballots from abroad to be counted as long as they were post-marked on or before election day, and arrived at the registrar of voter within five days of the election.  More in this Assembly Access Video…

Assemblymember Lowenthal: Equality Takes A Hit With High Court’s Prop 8 Ruling

(Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) joined several members of the Assembly Democratic Caucus at a capitol news conference to express their individual and collective dismay over the California Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld Proposition 8, the ban on same sex marriage. Assemblymember Lowenthal says the ruling legalized discrimination against millions of Californians. Despite the ruling the Long beach Democrat says she remains hopeful and says she’s ready to support the ongoing struggle to bring equal rights to all Californians, regardless of the sexual identity.
