Governor Vetoes Lieu Ultrasound Bill

Sacramento, CA - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed Assembly Bill (AB) 2360, a bill by Assemblymember Ted Lieu that would have restricted the sale of ultrasound machines to medical professionals and others trained in their use.

Despite being dubbed the “Tom Cruise Bill” in and around the capitol, AB 2360 was based on hard science. Many recent studies have pointed to the dangers of ultrasound technology when used by untrained persons. In addition, the Federal Food and Drug Administration has warned patients not to get any unnecessary ultrasound scans.

“I guess, in this case, celebrity overruled common sense,” Lieu said. “This bill was about patient safety. That’s why so many physician groups supported it.”

In vetoing the bill, the Governor claimed that it duplicated existing law – a claim that Lieu disputes. Lieu points out, that the Department of Finance analysis of the bill claimed that it would require $500,000 in additional staff to implement the bill.

“The only conclusion I can come to,” Lieu said, “is that the Governor’s Administration is not enforcing the law.”

AB 2360 had the support of a wide range of physician groups, including the California Medical Association, the American College of Obstetrician Gynecologists – District IX, and the California Radiological Society.

The 53rd Assembly District includes the cities of Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and portions of Western Los Angeles.
