Statement By Assembly Member Ted W. Lieu

Settlement agreement between Los Angeles International Airport and Petitioners

"Today is a great day for the communities and residents of the South Bay, Los Angeles, and California. I support and applaud the giant steps made with this historic settlement agreement, and I urge each stakeholder to continue the good work started here today. The agreement will limit airport passenger activity while simultaneously allowing for a number of much needed airport facility modernization projects to proceed. This agreement will make LAX safer, more modern, and take the airport into the 21st century.

"We also must use currently underutilized resources to create a regional air transportation system. Encouraging the use of alternative commercial airports in the region and linking these facilities would eliminate a great deal of traffic, noise and pollution for many of the residents who live near the airport. In addition, we must start laying the groundwork to run the Green Line into LAX.

"I look forward to working with all of those involved to continuing to address issues like these that are of such great importance to us all."

The 53rd Assembly District encompasses LAX as well as the communities of Lomita, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Venice, Westchester, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, and parts of West Los Angeles.
