Governor Schwarzengger Signs Lieu Bills Supporting Military Personnel

Torrance Assemblymember Joins Military Flag Officers at Camp Pendleton to Announce the Signing of AB 7, AB 392, and AB 1528

Sacramento, CA – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today signed Assembly Bill
(AB) 7, AB 392, and AB 1528, legislation by Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) to support military members in the State of California.  Assemblymember Lieu today joined flag officers from throughout California and Administration Officials at a ceremony at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside to announce the signing of the bills.

The bills deal with different aspects of military life:

  • AB 7 gives military members strong protections against predatory lenders,
  • AB 392 grants 10 days of unpaid leave to military spouses when their spouse returns from combat,  and
  • AB 1528 prohibits lenders from insinuating that they are associated with any branch of the military.

“This is a great moment for California, and for our young men and women in uniform,” said Assemblymember Lieu, who previously served active duty in the Air Force. “At a time in our nation’s history when we are fighting wars in two different countries, the least we can do is support our troops when they are at home.”

All three Lieu bills enjoyed wide bipartisan support throughout the Legislative process, and were strongly supported by military officers in California.  Joining Lieu at this morning’s ceremony were Major General Michael Lehnert of the United States Marine Coprs, Rear Admiral Len Hering of the United States Navy, and Major General William Wade of the California National Guard. Also present was Secretary Tom Johnson of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I want to thank the Governor for showing strong leadership on this issue,” Lieu said.  “He’s been a great partner in giving real protection to our young servicemen and women.”
