Legislature Approves Lieu Bills Supporting Members Of The Military And Their Families

Sacramento, CA – Late yesterday, the State Senate and Assembly gave final legislative approval to a package of three bills by Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) to support members and their families of the military living in California.  All three bills will now go to the Governor for a signature.

The three bills are as follows:

  • Assembly Bill (AB) 7 – This bill will significantly decrease predatory lending against members of the military in California.  It allows the State to enforce recently-enacted Federal laws protecting members of the military from predatory lending.
  • AB 392 – This bill allows spouses of military members to take up to ten days of unpaid leave from their jobs while their spouse is on leave from deployment overseas.
  • AB 1528 – This bill prohibits lenders from suggesting in their advertising that they are in some way affiliated with the branches of the military.

Assemblymember Lieu hailed the passage of all three bills: “Our young men and women in uniform are bravely serving our country overseas.  The least that we as a state can do is guarantee that, when they are home in California, we honor them and their families.”

Lieu previously served active duty in the United States Air Force, and is still in the Air Force Reserves.  He is the only member of either chamber of California’s Legislature who currently serves in the Military.
