South Bay Assemblymembers Past And Present Team Up To Protect Integrity Of Voter Information

Assembly gives final approval to bill by Assemblymember Ted Lieu that is supported by Secretary of State Debra Bowen

Sacramento, CALate yesterday the State Assembly today gave final legislative approval to Assembly Bill (AB) 1151, a bill by Assemblymember Ted Lieu to require counties to have a website or a toll-free telephone number where voters can verify their voter registration.

The bill was actively supported by Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who worked with Lieu throughout the Legislative Process to ensure the bill’s passage.  Bowen represented the 53rd Assembly District, now represented by Lieu, from 1992 until 1998.

“Voters are their own best advocates for ensuring that they are registered and that their information is correct,” Lieu said.  “This bill will allow them to check their status from the comfort of their own homes.”

Currently, there is no consistent practice between counties for verifying one’s right to vote.  While some have existing websites, others require the voter to appear in person.  This can create confusion for voters, and difficulty for those who are disabled or cannot drive.  AB 1151 resolves this issue across the State.

AB 1151 will now head to the Governor, who will have 30 days to act on the bill.

Assemblymember Lieu represents the 53rd Assembly District, which includes the cities of El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and Lomita, as well as Marina Del Rey and portions of the City of Los Angeles.
