(Sacramento, CA) –Assemblymember Lieu today joins a bipartisan delegation Assembly members to Washington, D.C. to lobby the Bush Administration and Congress for more federal funds for California and updates on federal legislation and programs that impact the state. Lieu and the delegation will be on Capitol Hill from Monday, March 19th through Wednesday, March 21, 2007. Lieu is the only Asian American Assemblymember from Southern California making the trip. “For every tax dollar California sends to Washington, D.C., we only get 79 cents back,” Lieu said. “With a new Congress and an aggressive lobbying effort, I think we can do better.” While in Washington, Lieu and his colleagues will be meeting with White House officials, California’s two U.S Senators, and with U.S. Representatives from California who serve on the House Appropriations Committee. Separately, Lieu will be meeting with the South Bay’s representative, Jane Harman, to discuss Los Angeles Airport, transportation, education, and other issues of concern to the region. “This isn’t just about money,” Lieu added. “We want to be heard on a whole range of issues – transportation, homeland security, and health care just to name a few. We’re going to bring that message right to their doorsteps.” Other planned meetings include: Senator Ted Kennedy on immigration; Rep. Henry Waxman, who is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health; Rep. Lois Capps, who Co-Chairs the Congressional Women’s Caucus and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, chair of the California Congressional delegation and chair of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration. |
