Assemblymembers Lieu and Huffman to Present Legislation Banning Trans Fat in Schools
|
|
|
| What: |
Assemblymembers Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) and Jared Huffman (D-San Rafeal) present AB 90, one of the first bills in the nation banning trans fat in schools, before the Assembly Education Committee. |
| When: |
Wednesday, March 14th, 1:30pm |
| Where: |
State Capitol, Room 4202 |
| Background: |
AB 90 combines pieces of AB 86 (Lieu) and the previous version of AB 90 (Huffman). The current version of AB 90 would ban artificially occurring trans fats in food served or sold in schools. Artificially occurring trans fats are found in hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, and have been unequivocally proven to lead to diabetes and heart disease. The bill focuses on public schools because schoolchildren have little or no choice in selecting foods while on campus, and the government is the provider of those meals. |
