(Sacramento, CA) – Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) today joined with the eight other Asian-American members of the Legislature to joint author Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 3, honoring January 13th as Korean-American Day in California.
The day was chosen to correspond with the date that is widely recognized as the beginning of Korean immigration to the United States. On January 13, 2003, a group of families from Korea began a journey across the Pacific toward Hawaii. Although they faced many struggles as the first travelers from their homeland, they opened a door that would be thrown wide open by the Federal Immigration Act of 1965.
“It is only right that we should stop and honor the many contributions that Korean-Americans have made to our culture,” Lieu said. “Korean-Americans have made their presence known in politics, sports, business, and many other fields.”
Lieu specifically mentioned several prominent Korean-Americans, including: Assemblymember Mary Hayashi, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Tammy Chung-Ryu, Survivor Winner Yul Kwon, and Super Bowl XLI Most Valuable Player Hines Ward.
Lieu also noted that his mother-in-law is Korean-American and that his district, which includes the City of Torrance, has one of the fastest-growing Korean-American populations of any region in the Country.
“I’m really looking forward to continuing to work with the Korean-American population as they enter a new era in their history,” Lieu said. “It’s a community that is important to our society, and to me personally.”
Assemblymember Ted Lieu represents the 53rd Assembly District, which includes the Cities of Torrance, Lomita, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and parts of the City of Los Angeles.
