Charles R. Drew University's School Of Nursing Named After Assemblyman Mervyn M. Dymally

During a special intermission of the Jazz concert at Drew, Dr. Susan Kelly, president and first female to lead Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, announced the naming of the Nursing School -- the new name shall be the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing at Charles R. Drew University.

Dr. Kelly offered the following remarks after her announcement:

“Assemblyman, Senator, Lieutenant Governor, Congressman, and Assemblyman, again, has been a stalwart champion for healthcare in the state of California. Whether he has fought to pass legislation or advocate for increased funding for educational research, the people should be honored to have him as their quintessential healthcare leader. Since the initial groundbreaking of this university, Chairman Dymally, has been responsible for delivering over $300 million to our doorstep.”

Completely surprised and honored, Chairman Dymally accompanied by his wife, Alice Gueno Dymally, stated, “For the first time in my political career, my staff kept a secret from me. I am truly humbled by the Board of Director’s decision to name this school in my honor. For decades, this university has served our community with pride -- I know the work of this school shall continue to improve the health status of our poor and underserved constituents.”

Assemblyman Mervyn M. Dymally is the Chairman of the Health Committee and Chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus.
