Assemblymember Curren Price To Hold Second Town Hall Meeting On Proposed Jet Fuel Pipeline

Assemblymember Price Invites All Gardena, Hawthorne and Lennox Residents and Business Owners to Take Part in This Important Dialogue

GARDENA, August 27, 2007 – Assemblymember Curren Price (D-Inglewood) will host an informational Town Hall Meeting at Rowley Memorial Park’s Auditorium in Gardena, on Friday, August 31st, to discuss the proposed jet fuel pipeline and its potential impacts to surrounding communities.  A panel of expert speakers will include representatives from the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Engineering’s Environmental Management Group,  the State Fire Marshal’s Pipeline Safety Division and WesPac Energy Group.  Public comment is encouraged.

“It is my desire to create a forum in which residents and stakeholders are able to receive accurate and substantive information on the proposed jet fuel line, as well as share their opinions and concerns about the project.” said Assemblymember Price. “Whenever a project has potential environmental impacts on a community I serve, it is incumbent upon me to ensure that residents and business owners within that community have full disclosure in order to make informed decisions about the future of that project.”

The proposed jet fuel pipeline, called the Smart Energy Transport System (S.E.T.S.), is an underground pipeline for transporting jet fuel from off-site storage facilities to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).  As planned, it would span the course of 25 miles and, at its minimum depth, would lie one yard underground.  Cities that may be affected by the proposed pipeline include: Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, El Segundo, Wilmington, and Los Angeles.  The pipeline would be built of steel with a special coating to protect it from soil and water.  To further protect the pipeline from corrosion, a DC electrical current would flow through the soil and water.  The total construction time for the project is estimated at six months.

If you live in or around any of the affected communities or would simply like to learn more about the project, Assemblymember Price invites you to attend this Town Hall.
