Assemblymember Curren Price Honors Publisher Willie Brown In Sacramento

Assemblymember Price honors Willie Brown, President of Inglewood Today, in Sacramento at the 2007 California Small Business Day awards ceremony.

SACRAMENTO—Assemblymember Curren D. Price was pleased to honor local resident, community activist, and publisher Willie Brown at the recent California Small Business Day in Sacramento.

“Small Business is a crucial aspect of our California economy and I am very proud to honor Mr. Willie Brown at California’s Small Business Day,” said Assemblymember Price. “Willie Brown demonstrates the dedicated, entrepreneurial spirit that is needed to accomplish the most lofty goals, both for himself and for his community. I commend Willie Brown in his efforts as a journalist, a community activist, and as a businessman.”

As a community activist, Mr. Brown founded the Inglewood Business Opportunity Network and has served as Chairman of the Civil Service Board of Review for the City of Inglewood. Mr. Brown also has served on the Boards of numerous organizations, including but certainly not limited to: the Inglewood Neighborhood Housing Service, the Boys and Girls Club of Inglewood, and the Inglewood Airport Chamber.

Mr. Brown is also active in the communications field: he publishes the weekly newspapers Inglewood Today, L.A. Crenshaw Today, and “Today’s Magazines.” Finally, he serves as Vice President for the California Black Media Association and is a Member for the West Coast Black Publishers Association.

“Mr. Willie Brown is a fine example of a man who has combined dedication and hard work toward goals that not only help his community but create a legacy for the future,” said Assemblymember Price, who has long been a strong advocate for small businesses and especially for minority enterprises.

As Inglewood City Councilmember, Mr. Price served as chair of the council’s Economic Development Committee, and he was an advocate for smart growth initiatives. Now, in his first year in the Legislature, Assemblymember Price serves as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Procurement, as a member of the Assembly Business and Professions Committee, as well as serving on the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy. He was recently honored to be appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly to the California Small Business Board. Legislatively, Assemblymember Price has introduced AB 610 this year, which if enacted, would directly help small businesses by enabling the Financial Development Corporations to make 50-75 more small business loans per year than under the current statutory cap.

Assemblymember Curren Price serves the 51st Assembly District, which includes Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Playa Vista, Westchester, Lawndale, West Athens, Lennox, Alondra Park, West Compton, Del Aire, and Willowbrook, as well as portions of the unincorporated area of Ladera.
