Latest News

Dear Friends:

Every 10 years California must redraw the boundaries of its Senate, Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts to reflect the new federal census population data.

In November 2008, California voters authorized the creation of the Citizens Redistricting Commission when they passed the Voters FIRST Act, which appeared as Proposition 11.

Prior to 2008, California legislators drew the districts.   For the first time in our State's history, ordinary citizens will draw the lines for State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts.

Why is this important?

  • The power now goes to the Citizens Redistricting Commission, which should reflect the diversity of the state’s racial and ethnic makeup.
  • Here is the problem: Only 3 percent of applicants are Latino, 7 percent are Black, 4 percent are Asians, and only 1 in 6 applicants is a woman.
  • We need representation that reflects California’s diversity.  This is your opportunity to make sure your community’s voices are heard.  For that reason, I urge you to apply to be considered one of the 14 prospective Redistricting Commissioners.

The application deadline is February 12, 2010. Members of the commission will be compensated $300 for each day the member is engaged in commission business.

For more information on application requirements for membership, as well as general information on the commission, please visit www.WeDrawTheLines.ca.gov.

Assemblymember Bradford Responds to State of the State Address

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Steve Bradford (D-Gardena) responded with guarded optimism following the Governor’s annual State of the State Address. Assemblymember Bardford said the Governor’s positive, upbeat tone in his speech is reason for hope but said he’s concerned working out the details to reach the goals set out by the Governor will be difficult to achieve. Here’s more from Assemblymember Bradford in this Assembly Access video.
