De La Torre to Lead Highway Clean-up
De La Torre and local volunteers team up to clean up highway off-ramps
Bell Gardens, CA – Assemblymember Hector De La Torre (D-South Gate) has organized volunteers from the local community for the first of a series of clean-ups in the 50th Assembly District. In this first clean-up event, volunteers will remove trash and other debris that accumulates near the Florence Avenue on- and off-ramps to Interstate 710 (Long Beach Freeway).

Due to years of insufficient funding for highway clean-up programs at the state level, Assemblymember De La Torre and residents of the 50th Assembly District have decided to be proactive in keeping their communities clean.

“The motivating factor for these clean-ups is pride in our communities,” said De La Torre, “We want the appearance of our neighborhoods to reflect our values. By maintaining clean freeways and streets, we deter further vandalism and promote greater respect for our communities.”

Background:

I-710 (Long Beach Freeway) is one of the most heavily used traffic corridors in all of California. Such heavy use results in a number of negative impacts, including the collection of trash and debris near freeway exits that give surrounding cities the appearance of being rundown.

This is the first in a series of clean-ups Assemblymember De La Torre will be conducting in the 50th District. The next clean-up is scheduled for November 19th in the cities of Downey and South Gate.

For more information, constituents are encouraged to call Assemblymember De La Torre’s district office at (562) 927-1200.
