De La Torre Receives “Legislator Of The Year” From Education Leaders

California Council For Adult Education honor De La Torre during annual Legislative Day

SACRAMENTO - The California Council For Adult Education (CCAE) recently announced naming Assemblymember Hector De La Torre (D- South Gate) as its 2007 Legislator of the Year.  The award will be issued on March 12, 2007 in the State Capitol.

CCAE cited Assemblymember De La Torre’s efforts to add a Saturday administration of the California High School Exit Exam to accommodate working and older students and for his constant support of adult education programs, workforce preparation and overall education funding.

Sue Gilmore, President of CCAE stated, "Assemblymember De La Torre has been a champion for the adult education community.  We are very pleased to recognize his hard work to expand critical education opportunities for adults."

“Adult education is a key component of our educational system here in California that is often overlooked.  I have seen firsthand how many lives have been changed by adult education programs,” stated De La Torre.  “I am proud to be recognized by the California Council For Adult Education.  Many of my constituents have been given expanded opportunities and second chances through adult education.”

Assemblymember De La Torre has partnered with his local adult education schools in various community events, including his annual toy drive, College Conference and freeway cleanups.  In addition, De La Torre is a frequent keynote speaker for adult education graduations.

CCAE is the state’s largest adult education organization.  It represents teachers, administrators and counselors within the adult education field.  CCAE focuses on legislative advocacy, government oversight with the CA Department of Education and in-service professional development for our members.
