Fair aimed at addressing awareness of childhood obesity |
Cudahy, CA - Assemblymember Hector De La Torre (D-South Gate) will partner with the Healthy Families, Healthy Communities (HFHC) Collaborative to sponsor a Resource and Awareness Fair this Saturday, February 3rd at Elizabeth Learning Center in Cudahy. The fair is specifically designed to address the issue of childhood obesity in our communities. The HFHC Collaborative brings together community-based organizations, local businesses and Los Angeles County Departments to organize a four-part campaign. Participants will receive free health screenings, participate in exercise activities, learn how to cook healthy meals with on-site cooking demonstrations and acquire practical tools for leading healthier lives. WHAT: WHO: WHERE: WHEN: Over 25% of children and 41.2% of adults in the Southeast cities, including Cudahy, Bell and South Gate, are overweight (Los Angeles Health Survey Data, 2003). Overweight children face a greater risk for developing Type II Diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and orthopedic and psychosocial problems (Surgeon General’s Report, 2001). |
