Assemblymember Mike Eng To Be Honored By Community College Association

Sacramento, CA – The Community College Association (CCA) will be honoring Assemblymember Mike Eng as their “Legislator of the Year” at their upcoming 2008 We Honor Ours (W.H.O.) Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 25, 2008.  The award recognizes Assemblymember Eng for his achievements as an elected official and his efforts at improving the community college system.

Assemblymember Eng is currently authoring two bills dealing with community colleges for the 2007 – 2008 Legislative Session.  Assembly Bill 906 would hold community colleges accountable to the fifty percent law – a law directing the community colleges to spend fifty percent of their budgets on faculty salaries and benefits.  In addition, Assemblymember Eng’s Assembly Bill 2277 would appropriate needed funds to the California Community College system in order to backfill the current year property tax shortfall.

“As a former community college part-time instructor, I am both honored and humbled by the Community College Association’s award,” stated Assemblymember Eng. “Our community college system is in desperate need of attention, and I hope to continue to work with CCA and other community college advocates to ensure the state provides our students with the highest quality education possible.”

The CCA serves as the community college branch of the California Teachers Association.  Their mission is to advocate for higher education professionals by promoting the well being of faculty in collective bargaining, lobbying, and representation activities.
