Unique Health Concerns for Asian-Americans, Pacific Islanders

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park), has unveiled “The State of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Health in California” report, which details the studies and findings by the University of California Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Multi- Campus Research Program. The report shows that some AANHPI ethnic groups are at higher risks of some illnesses compared to the rest of the population; while other AANHPI subgroups have been rarely studied if ever. The report seeks to provide valuable healthcare information to local and state policymakers, primary and secondary care providers, as well as, for and non-profit organizations, to better serve this growing and diverse community. Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.

Some key findings detailed in the report are:

  • AANHPIs in California today number over five million and comprise over 14% of the population, making this minority group one of the fastest growing racial populations in the state.
  • AANHPIs are the only racial group for whom the leading cause of death is cancer.
  • Samoan children have the largest percentage (54%) of all children in California whose body mass index (BMI) is not within the Healthy Fitness Zone.
  • Koreans have the highest rate of uninsured (33%) of any racial/ethnic group in the state – far outpacing the state average of uninsured adults (15%).
  • AANHPIs account for the largest proportion of all tuberculosis and chronic hepatitis B cases in California, with major cases among foreign-born population.

Larry's Law

(Sacramento) - There’s no place for hate on a school campus. With that sentiment in mind, Assembly Member Mike Eng has authored Assembly Bill 2762. It's been nicknamed “Larry’s Law” in memory of 14-year-old Larry King of Oxnard, a gay 8th grader, who was murdered in his classroom by his classmate. Police believe it was a hate crime. The goal of Assembly Member Eng's bill, AB 2762 is to make sure all children in California schools are safe and free from hate, intimidation, harassment, and violence by ensuring that school personnel are equipped with the necessary prevention and educational tools. More details on the proposed law are available in this Assembly Web Report.

Proper Handling of Human Remains

(Sacramento) – When railroad construction crews working in Los Angeles discovered historical human remains of Chinese origin it became apparent California does not have a system in place to deal with the discovery of non-Native American human remains. Assemblymember Mike Eng stepped in and developed Assembly Bill 2514. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report, AB 2514 will create a system similar to the process used today when Native American remains are discovered.
