California Budget Information

Dear Constituent,

Now that the May 19th special election is behind us and Propositions 1A through 1E have been rejected by voters, the time has come for us to direct our attention and efforts to solving California’s estimated $21.3 billion deficit.  As you know all too well, a budgetary shortfall of this magnitude will undoubtedly have an impact on the communities we serve.

Due to the continued deterioration of our state and local tax revenues as a result of the economic downturn and a potential cash-flow shortage in July, swift and immediate action will be necessary.  It is for that reason that the California State Legislature has decided to make the budgetary process quicker and more transparent by making the following changes:

• The May Revision will be heard in Conference Committee rather than the budget subcommittees.  The Conference Committee will essentially be tasked with closing the $21.3 billion deficit;
  
• Unlike in previous years, public testimony will be permitted in Conference Committee from May 26-28.  The policy for public testimony and a copy of the daily schedule containing the date, time, location and subject matter to be heard can be found on the link below.
  
• The goal is to have the Conference Committee finish its work by mid-June and have the 2009-2010 budget package approved and signed into law by July 1st.

The budget process will be moving quickly so I strongly encourage you to submit all concerns regarding the Governor’s May Revise in writing to the members of the Conference Committee as soon as possible.  Below you will also find a link that contains a list of all members of the committee for your convenience.
