| Governor Signs Legislation to Streamline the Sale and Lease of Community College Property | |
SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Mike Davis announced today that Governor Schwarzenegger has signed AB 1240 (Davis), which will increase the Los Angeles Community College District’s ability to provide educational opportunities for students. AB 1240 improves access to education in those areas that may have limited access to community college programs by streamlining the district's ability to enter into leases for educational facilities. Specifically, AB 1240 creates a pilot project authorizing the Los Angeles Community College District to enter into a lease of a facility of less than 50,000 square feet to be used as an educational center for up to five years prior to the requirement that the facility be retrofit to Field Act compliance. AB 1240 also streamlines the process for selling or leasing district property by eliminating an out-dated requirement that a community college district call for oral bids prior to finalizing a contract for sale or lease of district property. “I am pleased to learn that the Governor supports LA Community College District’s strong desire to provide increased educational opportunities in areas that have previously had limited access to community college programs” Assemblyman Davis (D-Los Angeles) stated. “AB 1240 will provide the Los Angeles Community College District the benefit of cutting down commute times, providing more course offerings closer to students homes, and increasing educational access for working students” Assemblyman Mike Davis concluded. Assemblyman Mike Davis is the current Chair of the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media. He was elected to serve the 48th District in November of 2006. Located in Los Angeles County, the district is home to a myriad of diverse communities including: Arlington Park, Athens, Chesterfield Square, King Estates, Korea Town, Lafayette Park, Magnolia Square, North University Park, University Park, Vermont Knolls, West Adams, West Park Terrace and Wilshire Center.
