January 23, 2008—(Los Angeles)—California Assemblyman Mike Davis hosted the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration, on January 18, 2007, from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the California African American Museum, located in the 48th District. The event brought together a diverse crowd of community representatives and leaders for the purpose of honoring the legacy and dream of Dr. King. In addition to commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Assemblyman honored Harry E. Johnson Sr., Esq., who is the President and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. The foundation has taken the lead in raising $100 million toward the erection of the National Martin Luther King, Jr. monument on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Senior United States District Judge Terry Hatter of the Central District of California was also honored for his distinguished career on the federal bench since 1980. Judge Hatter was a long-time vocal critic of the national-sentencing guidelines, noting that it was ill-conceived and it unfairly targeted minorities. Judge Hatter’s viewpoint became law when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Kimbrough vs. U.S. that judges can impose sentences below sentencing guidelines for crack cocaine offenses, where sentences are higher than similar powder cocaine offenses. “I am pleased to honor these two outstanding Americans who have brought forth institutional change through their professional contributions to society,” stated Assemblyman Mike Davis. “Their accomplishments will have lasting impact on future generations,” he concluded. There were musical performances by both Ali Woodson, the former lead singer of the Temptations, and the Musicians Institute Gospel Choir. Assemblyman Davis also spoke on the importance of Dr. King’s legacy. Attorney Johnson was honored with a resolution citing his continued efforts in raising the funds necessary to complete the monument. To date, Mr. Johnson and his team have raised over $87 million toward the $100 million goal. Judge Hatter also received a resolution for his outstanding work on behalf of justice in the American public.
