Assemblymember Bass to Host Town Hall Meeting on the proposed Federal immigration legislation and its impact on Black Immigrants
WHAT: Assemblymember Karen Bass (AD47) will hold a town hall meeting that will bring together the African, Caribbean, Guyanese and Belizean communities to discuss the pending Federal immigration laws on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. The event, which starts at 3 p.m., will include a resource fair with immigration rights, legal, housing, health, youth, senior citizen and public services informational booths.

This event will provide information on proposed Federal immigration legislation and how it will affect the Black immigrant community. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel that will include Maria Elena Durazo, executive director of LA County Federation; Alvaro Huerta, legislative advocacy for Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA); Mike Garcia, president of SEIU 1877; Mulu Alemayehu, immigration attorney; and Michael Ortiz, Legal Aid Foundation directing attorney. Co-sponsors for the event are the Ethiopian American Advocacy Group, CHIRLA and Central American Resource Center. Also attending will be Consulate General Roy Young of Belize and Consulate General M. Nyambura Kamau of Kenya.
