Majority Leader Karen Bass Issues a Call for Candidates to Apply for The Emilia Lechuga-Bass Civil Rights Internship

Text Box: LOS ANGELES --- For the second year, Majority Leader Karen Bass calls for candidates to apply for The Emilia Lechuga-Bass Civil Rights Internship with the Litt, Estuar, Harrison & Kitson Law Firm. The internship is for recent college graduates who are planning to attend law school with the objective of becoming civil rights/public interest lawyer.

This internship is named after Emilia Lechuga-Bass, who was a young woman planning to attend law school with the hope of practicing civil rights law. Emilia, who came from a politically active family in Los Angeles, was scheduled to work at the firm on a range of issues and to introduce her to the world of civil rights law. She was to link the firm’s civil rights impact work with the goals and needs of Los Angeles communities by collaborating with community organizations. Tragically, Emilia was killed in a car accident just before beginning her work at the firm.

In order for others to reach their goals, the Litt, Estuar, Harrison & Kitson Law Firm has created an annual internship in Emilia’s name to provide experience for young people hoping to attend law school with the goal of practicing civil rights and public interest law. The internship will provide an introduction into these areas by gaining real world experiences in a civil rights/public interest law firm.

Interns will gain practical legal experience by working on public interest and civil rights cases, including a number of class action cases. Application materials for the Internship that begins July 2008 must be received no later than March 1, 2008. Received applications will be screened and interviews will be scheduled with selected applicants. A decision by the Internship Committee will be made by April 30. Interns may not accept any other employment during the term of the Civil Rights Internship.
