Majority Leader Karen Bass appointed to Assembly Committees for New Legislative Session

LOS ANGELES --- Majority Leader Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) was appointed to four California Assembly committees for the 2007-2008 legislative session. The 47th District Assemblymember will serve on the Assembly Health; Business and Professions; Housing and Community Development; and Utilities and Commerce Committees.

“I’m looking forward to serving as a member of these committees that will focus on key issues affecting communities throughout the state,” states Majority Leader Bass. “Each Committee will help address the needs of Californians.”

  • Committee on Health primary jurisdictions are health care; Medi-Cal; mental health licensing of health and health-related professionals; and long term health care facilities.
  • Committee on Business and Professions primary jurisdictions are consumer protection; Department of Consumer Affairs occupational licensing including private postsecondary and vocational education; creation and elimination of regulatory agencies, boards and commissions; governmental organization, efficiency and cost control; Administrative Procedure Act and Office of Administrative Law; Department of General Services, state procurement and printing contracts; state and local property acquisition law; charitable solicitations; product labeling; and weights and measures including accuracy of product pricing.
  • Committee on Housing and Community Development primary jurisdictions are Subdivision Map Act regarding housing; structural fire safety; rent control; and redevelopment.
  • Committee on Utilities and Commerce primary jurisdictions are public utilities; the California Public Utilities Commission; the California Energy Commission; the California Independent System Operator; Electricity Oversight Board; energy companies; common carriers; electricity; alternative energy development and conservation; natural gas; wireless, wire line and cable communications; international trade; Women and Minority Business Enterprises; and tourism.

Karen Bass has been a State Assembly Member representing Los Angeles’ 47th District since 2005. Speaker Fabian Núñez selected Bass as the Majority Leader for the California State Assembly during the 2007-2008 legislative session, making her the first African American and the first woman to hold this leadership position. As the Assemblymember for the 47th District, Karen Bass serves the cities and communities of Culver City, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, Ladera Heights, the Crenshaw District, Little Ethiopia and portions of Korea Town and South Los Angeles.
