SACRAMENTO—Speaker Fabian Núñez (D-Los Angeles) today reappointed George Caplan to the 17-member California Postsecondary Education Commission.

“George Caplan’s extensive background in postsecondary education has been of great use to the California Postsecondary Education Commission,” Speaker Núñez said. “With this reappointment, he will be able to continue his valuable work addressing our state’s educational needs.”

George Caplan, 65, of Woodland Hills, is a partner and chair of the Los Angeles Litigation Department at Kaye Scholer LLP. He has previously served as the president of the Board of Governors of California Community Colleges, and as the president of the executive board of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and his law degree from Columbia Law School. He is a registered Democrat.

The California Postsecondary Education Commission assures the effective utilization of public postsecondary education resources, eliminates waste and unnecessary duplication, and promotes diversity, innovation, and responsiveness to student and societal needs through planning and coordination. The Commission also creates long-range planning, policy development and analysis, program administration, reviews new campuses and off-campus centers, and serves as a state clearinghouse for information on higher education. Members are paid $100 per meeting day. Caplan’s term continues through December 31, 2013.
