| Portantino Hosts College Readiness Workshop | |
| Representatives from University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges gather to assist prospective students | |
EAGLE ROCK, CA – Assembly Higher Education Chairman Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) hosted a half-day college workshop today for college-bound students and families. Held at Eagle Rock High School, representatives from California’s three higher education systems joined with the Campaign for College Opportunity, educators, private college reps, and event sponsors to provide critical information about the college admission process. “It is never too early to start thinking about college,” said Portantino. “California has long had a tradition of making college affordable to all that desired. However, these days, with the price of college continuing to go up, and more people competing for fewer spots, students and families need to have all these tools at their disposal so they can put their best foot forward. I hope those who attended today’s workshop found it useful and informative as they prepare for the life-altering event of college.” The workshop began with a series of sessions lead by representatives of the University of California, the California State University, the California Community Colleges and Independent Colleges and Universities on general admission “do’s and don’ts.” The sessions also covered such topics as financial aid opportunities, how to write a stellar college essay, time management and note taking techniques. Spanish translation was also made available at many of the sessions. After lunch was provided, door prices were award to further encourage participation. Such prices included a $500 scholarship from the Campaign for College Opportunity, an Apple iPod donated by Universal Bank, a $75 gift certificate from Target, and a $25 gift card from Vons. Assemblymember Anthony Portantino was elected to serve the 44th Assembly District in November of 2006. The district encompasses Altadena, Duarte, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena and Temple City. It also includes portions of Arcadia, Monrovia, Mayflower Village and the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods of Glassell Park, Hermon, Highland Park, Mount Washington and Eagle Rock. |
