Portantino Announces Housing Infrastructure Bond Funding Recipients
Nearly $5 million to be spent on projects in and around the 44th Assembly District on projects to help the housing needs of lower-income families

Sacramento – Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) today announced the Department of Housing and Community Development awarded projects in the 44th Assembly District.  The projects selected will receive state bond dollars originating from the first round of funding following the successful passage of Proposition 1C last November.

“I’m very pleased with the decision to fund these worthy projects that will go a long way to meeting our region’s low-income housing needs,” said Portantino.  “The voters of my district supported Proposition 1C by a 58% to 42% margin understanding that we need to invest in our human infrastructure as well as our public infrastructure.  All of the San Gabriel Valley residents stand to benefit from these sound investments.”

The 44th Assembly District was awarded $2.6 million by Department of Housing and Community Development under the CalHome Program, a program that dedicates funds to promoting homeownership opportunities for first-time homebuyers through the acquisition of new or resale homes.  Additionally, the program also helps homeowners maintain their existing housing by providing financing for rehabilitation.

Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services             $1,000,000
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity                   $600,000
City of Los Angeles (for Housing)                               $1,000,000

The Department of Housing and Community Development has also awarded $2.16 million in Workforce Housing Reward Grant Program funds to the following projects that will directly impact residents of the 44th Assembly District:

City of Los Angeles                                                     $2,139-970

  • Funding for construction of Imani Fe East and West Apartments – a 92-unit apartment complex for large families.
  • Funding for construction of Charles Cobb Apartments – a 76 unit affordable to very low income households/homeless persons.
  • Funding for the construction of the Three Courtyards Apartments – 52 affordable units for large families and survivors of physical abuse.
  • Funding for construction of Sichel Family Apartments – a 37-unit apartment building for large families.

City of Pasadena                                                          $29,348

  • Funding for the demolition of a vacant service station and the development of 6 units of for-sale housing in northeast Pasadena.
As noted by the department, dollars for affordable housing are very limited, and the competition for these funds was tremendous, so the applications in the 44th Assembly District should take pride in having designed a program that will have a strong impact of meeting all of California’s housing needs.
