June 18, 2009 - Assemblywoman Brownley calls on her fellow legislators to protect the Cal Grant program from budget cuts. The program enables students who meet academic eligibility and income requirements to receive financial aid to attend college. Higher education is not just for the wealthy, said Brownley, chairwoman of the Assembly Education Committee. Students who graduate with college degrees become the future drivers of the economy so providing them assistance to achieve their academic goals makes good economic sense. May 13, 2009—Assemblywoman Brownley addresses a rally on the steps of the state Capitol by the Campaign for Quality Education, which brought hundreds of post cards calling on lawmakers to support Brownley’s AB 8 School Finance bill and urged the governor to sign the measure when it lands on his desk. Assemblywoman Brownley said the struggle for equity and equality in schools still persists on the 55th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

May 13, 2009—Assemblywoman Brownley speaks to about 50 members of Community Action to Fight Asthma, a network of asthma coalitions in California, at the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento. The lawmaker explained how her bill, AB 821, the Clean and Healthy Schools Act, will help schools reduce absenteeism linked to toxic chemicals in standard cleaning products by switching to environmentally-preferable cleaners. CAFA members later lobbied lawmakers to support the bill.

Assemblywoman Brownley and Heinz Oster of Woodland Hills. Assemblywoman Brownley honored Mr. Oster as a survivor of the Holocaust during a memorial commemoration on the Assembly Floor on April 27. Oster was one of only 18 German-born children found alive in concentration camps after the war. He had been imprisoned in a Polish Ghetto at Birkenau, an Auschwitz stable and the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Hillbrant is Regional Director of the Congress of California Seniors, a regional mobilizer for the Central Coast for AARP, parliamentarian of the Ventura County Democratic Party, which she previously chaired, and a board member of many other civic groups.

March 4, 2009—Assemblywoman Brownley is joined by a Bag Monster at a news conference urging support of AB 68, which will change consumer behavior so billions of single-use plastic bags don’t clog landfills, maim and kill marine life and cost Californians $300 million a year in clean-up costs. AB 68 will give consumers a choice of switching to reusable bags or paying 25 cents for each plastic or paper bag for litter prevention and clean-up. The Bag Monster is composed of 500 plastic bags: the amount the average American uses in one year.

July 13, 2008 – Assemblymember Brownley presents formal Resolution from Senator Sheila Kuehl and herself, commemorating the Grand Opening of the beautiful new City of Calabasas Civic Center and Library. This will be the first municipal complex in the nation to achieve the coveted Gold LEED certification for its high level of energy efficiency and sustainable design.

October 21, 2007 -- The Perfect Firestorm Hits Malibu. In the early hours of Sunday Morning, October 21, a wind-whipped brush fire took off, sparked apparently by a downed power pole. Just over a month later, on November 24, wildfire struck the Malibu mountains again, this second one far more destructive.
