Hello, this is Assemblymember Julia Brownley.

As you know this week California has endured a devastating natural disaster

Bolstered by a dry spell and heavy Santa Ana winds, fires have spread through seven counties in Southern California, destroying more than 650 square acres, an area twice the size of New York City.

More than 2,500 homes have been destroyed or damaged, and there have been over $1 billion in damages.

At least 22,000 residents have spent some time in emergency shelters, and tragically, at least eight people have lost their lives.

Indeed, with more than 1 million evacuees, Southern California has become the home of the largest peacetime movement of American citizens since the Civil War.

All Californians affected by these fires can be assured that the California Assembly will work with the appropriate agencies to help provide the tools and resources necessary to both respond and to rebuild.

To all those impacted by the wildfires, if you have any concerns, we encourage you to contact the appropriate agencies or call your local representative.

And please, be safe and be smart.

The Assembly has created a website to provide the countless Californians looking to help with information on how and where to donate or otherwise volunteer to assist those affected. It can be accessed at www.assembly.ca.gov/wildfires.

We in the Assembly are proud of all the emergency responders and volunteers battling these blazes and providing other emergency services, many working around the clock during this trying week.

We also want to thank all the states that have provided California additional support in our time of need.

Even our friends in Mexico have provided firefighters to help battle the wildfires, and we thank them for their help.

While many Californians have suffered terribly, most observers agree that our emergency responders’ diligence and professionalism have averted what could have been a much worse disaster.

Californians are resourceful; we will overcome this tragedy.

Qué tal, les habla el asambleísta Pedro Nava.

Esta semana California ha soportado un desastre natural de grandes proporciones.

Reforzado por una sequía y los fuertes vientos de Santa Ana, los incendios se han extendido a través de siete condados en el sur de California, destruyendo más de 650 acres cuadradas, un área dos veces la superficie de la cuidad de Nueva York.

Más de 2,500 viviendas han sido destruidas o dañadas, y las perdidas alcanzan a más de mil millones de dólares.

Por lo menos 22,000 residentes han tenido que acudir a los albergues, y trágicamente, 6 personas han perdido la vida hasta el momento.

Efectivamente, con más de un millón de evacuados, el sur de California se ha convertido en el lugar donde mas estadounidenses en tiempos de paz han sido trasladados desde la guerra civil.

Todos los californianos afectados por estos incendios pueden tener la certeza que la Asamblea de California trabajará con las agencias pertinentes para proporcionar las herramientas y recursos necesarios para responder y reconstruir.
