AB 2159 – California’s education finance system is complicated and arcane, and in much need of structural reform. This bill would create the Commission for Funding with Accountability, Transparency, and Simplicity (FAcTS) to recommend parameters for a transition from the current system to a comprehensive finance system that is simpler, more transparent, and more effective.

SB 990 (Kuehl/Brownley) – Now law, SB 990 provides clear standards for the cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), a contaminated former rocket engine testing site. The remediation is to be administered by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and will insure the highest level of cleanup of the toxic and radioactive contamination before the property can be transferred to public ownership.

AB 2505 – Addresses the serious risks to both human health and the environment of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), commonly referred to as “poison plastic,” based on its toxicity during production, when it degrades and contaminates the ground in landfills, and in the air when superheated; ex., poisoning the air breathed by firefighters when it burns. AB 2505 would ban most PVC packaging in California by 2010.

AB 2895 – This measure will provide answers that are essential to strengthening the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for the tens of thousands of high school students who are unable to pass the exam and are being left behind.

AB 629 – Sexual Health Education Accountability Act. Requires that any publicly funded sex education program follows the same common sense guidelines as are applied to sex education in our public schools. The information must be medically accurate, effective, age-appropriate, and bias-free.

AB 2058 (Levine/Brownley/Davis) – Californians use roughly 19 billion single-use plastic bags every year, which become a significant component of litter, blown from trashcans into the environment, clogging storm drains, killing marine life and seabirds, and much more. AB 2058 would prohibit retailers from providing free plastic bags to their customers unless they can first demonstrate that they have achieved a 70% reduction in usage.

AB 1391 – Too often, old electronic devices are being tossed into curbside trash, ending up in landfills and leaking toxic chemicals and heavy metals into the soil and groundwater. This bill would require retailers to provide information on the proper recycling and disposal of old electronics to purchasers of new electronics right at the point-of-sale.

AB 2467 – We know the value of the money that our state invests in preschool and early childhood education. When a child will be transferring into public elementary school, this bill ensures that information from the prior year deemed beneficial to the student, including on development issues, social interaction abilities, and any diagnostic assessments, is provided to the parent or guardian, and to the elementary school with the parent’s consent.

AB 1821 – This bill deletes existing voluminous, burdensome and outdated reporting requirements for higher education systems in favor of more effective, manageable, and transparent reporting and accountability.

AB 2733 – Would require the seller of real estate property to disclose to a potential buyer that the property is located within a one-quarter mile radius of a defined environmental hazard site.

AB 3015 – Requires that the mandatory training for foster homes and foster families includes current school safety and violence prevention policies to ensure that foster youth and their caregivers understand how to report and prevent harassment and violence, not only in the homes, but at schools.

AB 2810 – This bill would have authorities screen victims of domestic violence, child abuse or prostitution to determine whether the person may also be a victim of the serious and growing crime of human trafficking. It also provides specific privacy protections to victims.

AB 607 – Lost or misplaced mail is one of the most common complaints from tenants in residential hotels, and can lead to identity theft and delayed receipt of time-sensitive mail. Bill requires all such hotels to provide secured mailboxes for its residents.

AB 1687 – With the State of California responsible for the health care needs of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or other reasons, a lack of clarity in the system about who may be authorized to share health records often results in inadequate information being available to caregivers. AB 1687 clarifies the rules that relate to sharing of vital health information.

AB 920 – With the mad rush to be first with the big celebrity pictures or “scoop,” the media have been offering money or other compensation to personnel inside law enforcement in exchange for confidential information about ongoing investigations. This can seriously compromise the integrity of any criminal investigation. AB 920, sponsored by law enforcement, makes it illegal to sell or trade information that is not yet public.
