Levine's Cable Competition Bill Signed by the Governor

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys) today made the following statement regarding the Governor’s signing of AB 2987 – The Digital Infrastructure and Video Competition Act:

“Today’s historic signing of Assembly Bill 2987 represents the culmination of several years of hard work that will bring billions of dollars in new, private investment pouring into California.

“Last May I started a working group with representatives from local government, cable companies, satellite companies, telephone companies, and consumer groups to find a way to restructure California’s communications regulatory system. Since that time there have been countless hours spent meeting with these groups in the effort to craft a piece of legislation that we could all be proud of and would deliver benefits to the people of this state – AB 2987 does just that.

“I believe this bill will significantly change the lives of many Californians. Not just because it will bring new options to the cable TV market, but because it will bring lower cost ultra-high speed internet access to communities across the state while also making it easier for all companies to enter new video markets.

“This legislation will save California consumers money. Choice brings competition, and competition will bring prices down. The biggest winners in today’s signing will be California’s consumers.”
