| WHAT:
| Kicking off the busy travel season this Memorial Day weekend despite high fuel costs and a bad economy, Assemblymember Lloyd Levine (D-Woodland Hills, Los Angeles Co.) will hold a media availability to discuss his Assembly Bill 408 designed to financially protect airport skycaps by keeping luggage tips in their hands instead of the airlines. Levine authored AB 408 insuring any money skycaps receive from airline passengers for transporting their luggage be considered gratuity and kept as part of their wages. Airlines have recently started to charge customers a $2 per bag fee when using skycaps. Customers often assume the fee is a tip and have stopped tipping the skycaps.

- Skycaps are losing a substantial portion—variously reported up to 40 percent of their income and up to $80.00 per day--of their income, as a result of the $2 per bag curbside fee.
- Passengers are now saying, “I’m not giving the airlines another cent! I’ll just check my bag inside.” This makes the lines longer at the ticket counters, a further deterioration in airline service.
- United, American, US Airways, and Northwest are the largest airlines with the $2 per bag curbside fee.
