Assemblymember Nava opposes BHP Billiton at California Coastal Commission

Commission votes 12-0 to Deny Project; Calls on Governor to "Terminate the Terminal"

  Santa Barbara -
Assemblymember Pedro Nava, Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee and Chair of the Joint Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security, opposed BHP Billiton at the California Coastal Commission hearing on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Fess Parker's Double Tree Hotel in Santa Barbara. "As a former 8 year member of the Coastal Commission, I understand the role of the Commission and its mission to protect California's coastal resources," said Nava. "The Commission appreciated the risks of this project and that it would pose irreparable harm to air quality and coastal resources. This project is unacceptable. It is dirty and dangerous.

It is not the environmental legacy we want to leave our children and grandchildren. We need to think 7 generations into the future.

The Commission did the right thing. Now that State Lands and the Commission have rejected

BHP, we need to convince the Governor to terminate the terminal."

Assemblymember Nava has taken the lead along with community leaders to oppose the proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) factory (BHP Billiton's Cabrillo Port) off the Coast of Oxnard and Malibu.

The proposed LNG floating

factory is an unacceptable risk to public safety because of inadequate safety review. Additionally, the project will cause irreparable harm to air quality and marine life off the Ventura and Los Angeles County Coast.

The Cabrillo Port LNG facility proposed just fourteen miles off the coast will produce from extraction to consumption 25 million tons of greenhouse gasses a year and spew over 200 tons of smog producing pollutants into the Ventura and Los Angeles air basin. The Cabrillo Port will be the single largest source of pollution in Ventura County. It has more than 20 Class I significant and unmitigated impacts to air, water, marine mammals, noise and recreation that are inconsistent with Chapter 3 policies of the California Coastal Act, The California Coastal Management Program, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act as administered by the state of California.

Assemblymember Pedro Nava to Chair Joint Committee on Emergency Services & Homeland Security

Sacramento - Assemblymember Nava was recently selected by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez to Chair the Joint Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security. The fourteen member committee made up of seven assembly members and seven senators is charged with examining California's readiness to deal with natural and man-made disasters including terrorist attacks, earthquakes, floods, fires and tsunamis.

"The Joint Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security will impact major disaster and emergency preparedness issues facing our state," Assemblymember Nava said. "The people of California deserve to know the steps their local, state, and federal officials are taking to ensure their health and safety when confronted with large scale public emergencies. Having served last year as the Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee, I am pleased that I will be able to continue the work I started. We must reform emergency preparedness, and strengthen programs that work well. We must be prepared to respond if and when the next disaster strikes."

Assemblymember Nava has conducted and attended numerous hearings on emergency preparedness and homeland security during the past two years which have focused on learning from disasters, such as the La Conchita mudslide in Ventura County, the 2005-06 severe winter storm damage, the Southern California Wildfires, and on deficiencies in homeland security. As a result of these hearings, Assemblymember Nava has authored a number of measures to improve California's emergency and disaster preparedness and reform both the Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security.

Santa Barbara - On March 20, Assemblymember Pedro Nava, Chair of the Joint Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security and the Assembly Transportation Committee, attended an event honoring the support of the Santa Barbara Firefighters Alliance (SBFFA) conducted by Santa Barbara County and City Firefighters. Supporters had the opportunity to view and even use some of the equipment themselves. Purchases such as the thermal imaging camera, which allows firefighters to locate objects and people in a pitch black smoke filled room, are not allotted for in the departments budgets but empower firefighters to do their jobs with greater ease, safety and security.

SBFFA executes its mission to support firefighters in Santa Barbara City and County to maximize efficiency and safety and to support the welfare of the firefighters through private donations and fundraisers. "The support the Alliance provides to our city and county firefighters is invaluable," said Nava. "Their work and that of its founder, Betty Stephens, has enabled our local first responders to be better equipped and better prepared to protect all of us."
