Assemblymember Nava continues to lead the fight against the expansion of offshore oil drilling in the California Legislature. As an alternative to the Governor’s plan to expand offshore oil drilling and borrow against future oil royalties to raise revenue, Mr. Nava has introduced a 10% oil severance tax which will raise more than $1.5 billion dollars for education, healthcare for seniors, public safety and state parks.

As of January 1, the California Department of Public Health’s Every Woman Counts Program (the state’s arm for breast cancer screening for low-income women 40 years of age and older) will: 1) cease enrolling women under the age of 50; and 2) freeze enrollments for women age 50 and older until July 1, 2010. I am working on this issue in coalition with breast cancer advocates and health organizations across California.

On October 24th, 2009 a 16-year-old girl in Richmond was repeatedly raped by up to 10 men and up to 20 people watched it happen, taking pictures, laughing for over two hours.  These observers will not be held accountable for their actions and could not even be detained for questioning because the girl was over 14 years old.  The law should protect all victims of rape and murder, no matter if you are 16, 19 or 60 years old.  AB 984 will give the same protections to all victims.
