SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Pedro Nava introduced legislation today to provide relief for victims of the devastating fires that struck California this year.

The Governor of California declared states of emergency for Ventura County (Day Fire) in September and Riverside County in October due to natural disasters.

“My legislation is very important for those families who have suffered great losses at the hands of mother nature,” said Assemblymember Nava. “It will also provide much needed assistance to local governments to help cover their costs associated with the disasters. This legislation is one small way that we can help.”

The proclamations qualify affected persons and counties for various forms of state assistance. Specifically, this legislation will allow taxpayers in the affected counties, who suffered disaster losses as a result of the fires and other related casualties, to claim these losses either in the year in which they were experienced or in the prior year by filing an amended tax return. Additionally, the measure will provide state assistance to reimburse these counties for property tax loses.
