LETTER: Academy prepares local candidates for campaigns

In every local election, there are a handful of candidates who learn the hard way about running for office without insight on the issues, ethical campaign training and broad community support.

In February, the San Joaquin Political Academy will begin its fifth year of offering a unique training course to Fresno County residents interested in public service. Enrollment opened Aug. 15.

SJPA instructors are true community leaders and include former Secretary of State Bill Jones, Assembly Members Juan Arambula and Mike Villines, retired Fresno County Schools Superintendent Pete Mehas, retired county Supervisor Stan Oken and many others from the private, public and non-profit sectors. Our graduates include elected officials and current candidates.

Our mission is to assist in the development of visionary political leaders who recognize that a healthy business climate is necessary for a strong economy, and a strong economy is necessary for a vibrant community.

Our strategic partners include the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, the Business Council, the Fresno County Farm Bureau, the Hispanic Chamber, the Building Industry Association and the Fresno Association of Realtors.

For more information, call 313-3304 or visit our Web site, www.sjpa.org.
