SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Nicole Parra (D-Hanford) has named Mary Clare Navalta, from Delano High School, and Emily Trujillo, of Hanford West High School, to participate in Women in Politics 2006. This program is coordinated by the California Center, a non-profit, non-partisan organization seeking to educate students about public policy and state political issues.
“This is a fantastic program that offers young women a unique insight into the democratic process,” said Assemblywoman Parra. “I am confident Mary Clare and Emily will make us proud and really enjoy this experience.”
This summer (June 20-23), forty young women, between the ages of 14 and 18, will come to Sacramento from communities throughout California to explore public policy, political issues, and political processes as part of the Women in Politics Program. Included in the program are dinners and breakfasts, lodging, transportation to Sacramento, admission to all tours and activities, and program materials. The group will partake in a series of interactive meetings with professionals from the legislative and executive branches, lobbying groups, and the media. Participants will also analyze different perspectives on a variety of statewide issues and hold simulated legislative hearings. Upon returning home, participants are urged to compose reports and generate discussions as a way of educating their fellow students and constituents.
