Assemblymember Parra Passes Health Bill Out Of Assembly

SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Nicole Parra (D-Hanford) announced her bill to require nutritional disclosure of menu items at chain restaurants, AB 2572, passed out of the State Assembly. The bill now will now go to the State Senate.

“This bill will ensure people can make informed dietary decisions when they eat out at restaurants. This bill increases the consumer’s ability to make smart, healthy choices” said Assemblymember Parra. “Information should be available for consumers to make informed decisions, but food service establishments should not face conflicting requirements from various levels of government, which would make implementation difficult for chain establishments.”

AB 2572 would require every covered food facility, with at least 20 other food facilities in the state with the same trade name, to disclose certain nutritional information for each standard food item, including: calories, amount of fat, saturated fat, trans fat, amount of carbohydrates, and total amount of sodium.

In order to allow a food facility the flexibility to provide the required information in a practical manner that allows consumers to make healthy choices, the facility may disclose the information in a number of ways. This includes: menu or other writing at the point of sale, standard food item packaging, counter or table tent, tray liner, poster, brochure or other printed material, and/or electronic kiosk. The information must be available on the premises of the restaurant.

AB 2572 is sponsored by the California Restaurant Association and is supported by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and hundreds of locally owned businesses throughout the Central Valley and the state.
